Advantage For Veterans

Having a Medicare plan alongside your TRICARE or VA health coverage can actually increase your coverage benefits, as well as the amount of places you can receive health services and coverage.

Combination of Plans

You are allowed to combine your veteran healthcare coverage with a Medicare plan. However, to enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan, you must first be enrolled in Original Medicare (Part A and B). Part A is inpatient hospital coverage. Part B is outpatient medical coverage.

Medicare Advantage is just another way to receive Original Medicare benefits, as well as extra coverage. Some of the extra benefits that Medicare Advantage provides are:

  • Dental, vision, and hearing coverage
  • Prescription drug coverage
  • Transportation to doctor visits
  • Adult daycare services
  • Fitness memberships
  • Nutrition programs
  • Wellness programs

Enrollment

There are several Medicare Advantage Plans you may qualify for:

  • Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) Plans
  • Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) Plans
  • Private-Fee-For-Service (PFFS) Plans
  • Medical Savings Account (MSA) Plans
  • Special Needs Plan (SNPs)

There are also several periods in which you can enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan:

  • Initial Enrollment Period: The Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) is a seven-month period that starts three months before your 65th birthday month and ends three months after.
  • Annual Election Period: The Annual Election Period (AEP) lets Medicare beneficiaries change their Medicare coverage from October 15 to December 7.
  • Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period: The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period starts from January 1 and ends March 31. You must already be enrolled in a Medicare Advantage Plan to use this period, but it will allow you to switch to another Medicare Advantage Plan if need be.
  • Special Enrollment Period: The Special Enrollment Period (SEP) gives you the opportunity to sign up for Medicare or switch to a new Medicare plan, but only if you are in a special circumstance.
