Does Medicare Cover Telehealth Services?

Telehealth is a very beneficial virtual alternative to in-person healthcare. Medicare does cover telehealth, and there are certain requirements you can meet to receive specific telehealth coverage.

The Parts of Medicare and What Covers Telehealth

There are several different parts of Medicare to consider when discussing coverage:

  • Medicare Part A (hospital insurance)
  • Medicare Part B (medical insurance)
  • Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage plans)
  • Medicare Part D (prescription drug coverage)

Coverage for Telehealth Services

A telehealth visit is typically treated the same as if you go to an in-person outpatient visit. This includes office visits, consultations, certain therapies, and more. For instance, a quick checkup to discuss your health condition is covered under Part B and thus is covered for both in-person and online.

As long as your telehealth visit falls under the category of “medically necessary” for your treatment or as prevention, it’s covered by Medicare. Here are some common examples of when telehealth might be used:

  • Training or education
  • Out-of-area consultations
  • Care planning
  • Mental health services
  • Nutritional therapy
  • Health risk assessments
  • Screenings
  • Receiving help to quit smoking

Telehealth Coverage Eligibility

Once you’re enrolled in Original Medicare, you’re eligible for telehealth services. But, in some cases, certain conditions must be met to receive coverage for a specific telehealth service.

For instance, you may need to go to a healthcare facility for telehealth services. While home visits seem like the default option, you may need to qualify for home healthcare to receive coverage for it.

Location can also be a factor in your eligibility for certain telehealth benefits.

And, once again, not every telehealth service is covered in every situation. If it’s not considered a preventative visit or necessary for direct treatment of your condition, your telehealth visit likely won’t be covered.

However, generally speaking, telehealth services are covered by Medicare, but there are certain specifics involved in receiving coverage.
